Description:
It is both an economic necessity and a political goal to produce battery cells in Europe in the future. Accordingly, a large number of battery cell factories have been announced in Europe in recent years and the momentum is still continuing today.
But what factors play a role in establishing successful and sustainable battery production in Europe? And what does the current status quo actually look like?
The expert discussion ‘Batteries made in Europe – The way to success’ on the 10th of October is dedicated to these two questions. The two battery experts Julian Schwenzel from Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM and Tim Wicke from Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI will discuss which production technologies are possible and what sustainable battery production in Europe could look like. They will also shed light on the demand for skilled workers that the planned expansion of the battery industry will entail and how this demand can be met with specialised training and further education.

Our speakers:
Dr Julian Schwenzel is the head of the Electrical Energy Storage department at Fraunhofer IFAM and director of the Fraunhofer Project Centre for Energy Storage and Systems ZESS. His research focuses on next-generation batteries and the associated process technology.

Tim Wicke works as a research associate at the Competence Center Emerging Technologies at Fraunhofer ISI. His work focuses on market monitoring for energy storage and e-mobility, technology analyses for lithium-ion batteries as well as technology impact assessments and innovation system analysis.
